The inaugural presentation of The Nursing Center for Tobacco Intervention is pleased to highlight Louise M. Nett, RN, RRT, as our Feature Interventionist. Ms. Nett is a well-respected tobacco cessation activist, both nationally and internationally. For many years, Louise has worked diligently to reduce tobacco prevalence among a variety of patient populations. Her earlier work involved patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, both in critical care and pulmonary rehabilitation settings. Louise's practice with smoking cessation branched out to include all those with smoking-related illnesses. She has been instrumental in developing networks of providers who are interested in tobacco cessation. Ms. Nett started and is the editor of NICO-NOTES, a newsletter that provides tobacco cessation information to clinicians.

Louise currently serves as research associate at the Health ONE Center for Health Sciences Education in Denver, Colorado where she focuses on the early detection of chronic obstructive lung disease, lung cancer and smoking cessation. She is a member of the American Thoracic Society's Nursing Assembly, the American Association for Respiratory Care, the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco, and the American College of Chest Physicians. She also has lectured at more than 150 national education programs, hundreds of local courses, and has been a consultant and lecturer in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Mexico, England, Germany, Canada, and Japan.

In recognition for her work, Ms. Nett has received numerous awards. Some of them include, the Charles H. Hudson Public Respiratory Health Award from the American Association for Respiratory Care (1991), and one from the American College of Chest Physicians for work in developing and promoting smoking cessation (1992). She was a finalist in the University of Colorado School of Nursing Nightingale Awards for human caring and recognized by the Colorado Nurses' Association for contributions to the health of the citizens of Colorado. Louise received the American Journal of Nursing Book of the Year Award for Enjoying Life with Emphysema, co-authored with Thomas L. Petty (1987).
